Application of Trace Evidence Analysis in a Case of Falling Object Investigation

摘要: 目的 研究不同来源砖头的外观、矿物、元素差异,建立综合区分方法,实现涉案砖头检材与可疑来源砖头样本的比对和溯源。方法 用X射线荧光光谱(XRF)、X射线衍射(XRD)、扫描电子显微镜-能量色散X射线方法(SEM/EDS)检验检材坠落砖头与11份不同来源的样本砖头的外观、矿物和元素差异,并用极差法对元素定量分析结果进行甄别。结果 坠落砖头与6个嫌疑房间的砖头样本的分析结果有显著差异,与1个嫌疑房间样本的分析结果无显著差异。结论 检验结果实现了砖头的区分和溯源。通过对砖头中元素和矿物成分的多方法检验和数据处理,能够挖掘、分类和溯源相关的证据信息,为高空坠物案件侦办提供线索。

Abstract: Objective To establish a comprehensive method for comparing bricks from the scene and suspicious sources, and tracing the source of the questioned falling brick. Methods X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM/EDS) methods were used to study the differences in appearance, minerals and elements of the questioned falling brick and eleven known bricks. Range analysis was applied to the quantitative XRF data of different brick samples. Results Known samples collected from six suspicious rooms were excluded as significant difference was observed in the analytical results. The room where the known sample 8-11 were collected from was recognized as the source of the falling brick, for the examination revealed no significant difference. Conclusion The elemental and mineralogical analysis results of the bricks and the concrete residues helped to distinguish different bricks and confirm the source of the questioned brick. By multi-method analysis and statistical data process, brick samples can be compared and their falling source might be detected, which provides forensic evidence for the investigation of falling objects cases.
